Workshop: From integrated information to conscious experience

Mi3, Munich, Germany - November 27-28, 2025

Venue: Mi3/LMU, Gabelsbergerstrasse 62, 80339 München

How is it possible for conscious experience, our inner mental life populated by
subjective sensations, feelings and thoughts, to arise from information processing in
our brain?

This interdisciplinary workshop brings together perspectives from philosophy,
neurophysiology, cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, to discuss what
is often considered a key step in this process: integration of information. Although the
notion is popularly associated with the Integrated Information Theory (IIT), beyond
this theory there is in fact a variety of different integration forms with crucial roles for
consciousness. Advancing our understanding of consciousness and its neural bases
requires clarifying the roles of these different kinds of integration. These will be our goals
in the two days of our workshop.
